Instructional Design in Online Learning

Canvas Course: Robinson, L - "College Exploration"

Week 1 Assignment

Week 4 Assignment

After creating my own online course, I considered other courses on our campus that could potentially be a good fit for a hybrid or online design. There were two specific elective courses that came to mind, Career Pathways and Spanish I. The Career Pathways course is a mandatory semester class for all 8th grade students in our district. It allows students to explore the courses available to them at the high school level. Extending beyond that, students also have the opportunity to explore individual career interests as they prepare for their future. Because this is an exploratory course, I think it could easily fit into the online realm. Much of what the students do in this course consists of online research. With the addition of multimedia rich lessons and video conferencing this course could be the second phase of the course I created. Students could host web-based interviews with professionals in various careers to make a real-world connection to their future goals. It could also make way for potential online apprenticeships.

Our introductory Spanish language and culture course would also be a great fit for online learning. There are many programs such as Duo Lingo, Skype, and Microsoft for Educators that could help students develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills online. The instructors could create videos to assist students at the beginning of the unit. Students could interact with peers or others across the nation. Since the major emphasis is on conversational usage of Spanish in real-life situations, they could easily connect with native speakers in other nations. It would be a perfect way for them to be fully emerged into the language and culture without having to leave home to study abroad.

Successful Online Programs

These are a few of my favorite online programs that help increase student engagement and understanding. They can be easily shared in an LMS course.

  • Accredible Certificates & Badges - This program allows you to create, manage, and distribute digital certificates or badges to learners for accomplishing assigned tasks within a course. Students can save and access their credentials across all social media platforms.

  • BrainPOP – This program has cross-curricular animated resources that are engaging for younger students. It includes animated movies, learning games, interactive quizzes, and concept mapping. It can easily be shared with students via email or LMS.

  • Discovery Education – This program is a streaming service filled with cross-curricular content to help students learn. There are a wide variety of learning resources such as instructional videos, skill builders, writing prompts, multimedia activities, audio, and articles.

  • Flipgrid – This program helps promote engagement and collaboration with content and peers. It is designed for students to record, share, and view short videos. This is a great way to strengthen the social community of any course.
