Developing Effective Professional Learning

I serve in a middle school with approximately 900 seventh and eighth grade students. In 2014, our district established a BYOD (Bring your own device) and 1:1 iPad initiative for all secondary students. I have established a professional learning plan to help our campus transition to blended learning environments. Blended learning will significantly impact our campus and better align our campus objectives with the visions of our innovative district.

Although our campus has made some strides towards keeping up with our innovative district when it comes to professional development for teachers, we are still using a one size fits all approach. It’s time that we move beyond the generic and passive learning formats to an engaging, rigorous, task oriented approach. My call to action at JCMS is to transform Professional Development into Professional Learning!

To carry out my vision, I developed a blended learning (BL) professional learning plan. Blended learning is the key that takes the limits off of learning for students and adults. My ultimate goal for altering our format of PL at JCMS is to make learning more engaging and enjoyable for our teachers, which ultimately creates more enjoyable learning experiences for our students. By incorporating blended models for PL, teachers will acquire a better understanding of BL while experiencing personalized learning. This alternative professional learning plan connects to my Innovation Plan to establish more BL environments at JCMS.
