Growth Mindset
Carol Dweck’s discovery of the power of a growth mindset, versus a fixed mindset, has empowered me to be optimistic about my DLL journey. Since it’s been several years since I’ve been in school, I will need to adopt a growth mindset about the potential challenges that will arise in this program. When I am tasked with an assignment, I will use Dr. Dweck’s four steps to help me overcome fear, self-doubt or resistance. I will talk back to my fixed mindset, press forward and persist through my determination to succeed (Dweck, 2006). Being knowledgeable about the effects of a growth mindset will help me to work hard and not give up. With a growth mindset, I will be able to accept feedback from my professors and peers and use it to better myself as a Digital learner and leader.
Failing Forward Strategies
I will use the growth mindset ideas of failing forward as motivators on this journey. I will be willing to make mistakes because it will serve as an opportunity to learn and grow. Failure is not a bad thing, it is a vital part of the process. Throughout the program, I will try new strategies, without hesitation. Arthur Ashe once said, “Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome (Annesley, 2015).” Through curiosity and discovery, I will construct new ideas upon my experiences of failure and success. I embrace the journey that lies ahead.
COVA Model
I agree with the COVA Approach and believe that it can have a significant impact on my learning. COVA means to give learners choice and freedom in their experiences, ownership to control their experiences, voice to share their insights with others, and authentic learning via relevant experiences to the learner (Harapnuik, 2018). This method will cause me to really dig into the DLL program because it will force me to take ownership of my learning. Choice will probably be the most challenging concept for me to embrace. Having so much freedom can cause some uncertainty. I am used to following direct instructions or recipes for success although, I do like having the ability to choose my own path. It’s just a little intimidating to chart unknown territory. Keeping a growth mindset will help me to persevere when self-doubt sets in. The greatest benefit of utilizing COVA in the DLL will be having authentic learning opportunities. Having content that’s relevant and relatable to my life will definitely capture my interest. I am excited about the opportunities that will be presented throughout this journey of learning.
